Through our partnership working, we have been able to pool our resources in delivering support and services for young people and our local labour market through our Choices Clubs which is an integral tool we use for engagement of our young people, especially those who have an interest in music and the arts. This is also moves them into sustainable employment and arm them with interpersonal, leadership and organizational skills as well as highly essential soft skills which are transferable in real life work experiences. Empowering Young People -Tackling Social Issues  :    2026 to 2028

Knife Crime and unemployment will be our main feature using Public Health Approach focus

The number of young people carrying knives and unemployment  is increasing, and we have chosen to help tackle the problem with an education programme that shows the effects of knife crime. It is intended to show young people the consequences that carrying knives and other weapons can have on them and their lives. We believe that if young people take part in the scheme, and early guidance and resources are available, there is a much greater chance of a positive effect in persuading them to change their behaviour.

Objective

We promote safety and the prevention of crime by raising awareness among young people who carry knives, or who previously have done, and other weapons, through education, training, and other activities. Our aim is to reach young people in order to try and prevent unnecessary events or the loss of lives as a consequence.

Our Programme

The programme combines training and skills developed within a learning environment. It will develop basic skills including literacy and numeracy, and work towards gaining relevant, valuable qualifications. It offers a package that benefits young people and assists them to develop and acquire skills for life.

By providing a range of different services and support to help educate young people, including careers advice, information, advice and guidance (IAG), mentoring, counselling, and employment, education, and training opportunities, we aim to empower them to make informed choices to improve their prospects. Providing life coaching and positive role models who inspire and encourage young people to strive towards their goals and ambitions is a starting point to address some of the current problems.

Aims

  • Provide positive support to young people and give practical experience of education, employment and training activities, targeting those who are Not in Education, Employment or Training (NEET), where provision is often limited
  • Provide training sessions that include literacy and numeracy at different levels according to each individual's ability
  • Run job search and CV workshops to assist those seeking employment, including producing high quality CVs, letters, and application forms, plus career-specific skills
  • Offer one-to-one careers advice and guidance to help with career goals while supporting young people actively seeking education, employment or training opportunities
  • Raise awareness amongst young people about the effects of gang culture and improve individual literacy and numeracy levels in line with government policy
  • Empower young people to gain confidence and self-belief through motivation, helping them promote themselves in a positive way and understand how to deal with difficult situations
  • Provide opportunities that encourage young people to develop and acquire employment and life skills

We develop skills and knowledge in reading, maths, writing, speaking and listening, computer literacy, problem-solving and decision-making, team working, a strong work ethic, a positive attitude, and self-presentation. We motivate and empower young people to build confidence and think positively, with regular one-to-one sessions to monitor progress, set goals, update action plans, and recognise achievements and positive outcomes.

Benefits

The sessions tackle the issues of knife crime and create awareness among the younger generation in promoting the current situation. They focus on different aspects of knife crime, including:

  • The consequences of having a criminal record and its detrimental effect on individuals and employment, plus the effects of knife injuries and awareness of the current situation
  • How to protect yourself without carrying a knife or other weapon, and gaining knowledge of gang and knife culture and how it can affect their lives
  • Learning how to market their skills in a positive way to secure future employment or self-employment
  • An opportunity to gain insight into a positive future with hope, equipped with the knowledge and skills to help gain future employment
  • Thorough systems to help young people develop the literacy and numeracy skills they need to enhance their employability
  • Help getting youths into jobs, reducing their chances of getting caught up in violent crime, with training to get on the career ladder, including mock interviews with businesses
  • Creating opportunities for young people in deprived areas, seen as vital in tackling the knife and gun crime that has blighted London
  • Thorough initial assessments, comprehensive progress reviews, and innovative projects to help young people develop their skills
  • Equipping young people who would like to pursue a career, qualifications, or employment opportunities
  • Opportunities for young people who wish to engage in employment, education and training
